Sora 2 is a video generation tool from OpenAI. It turns text, images, or video clips into new video with matching audio.

You get up to 25 seconds of footage with dialogue, sound effects, and background noise all generated together. The tool tries to keep physics believable—objects stay where they belong, and motion looks natural.

It works inside a mobile app or on the web. You need an OpenAI account, and much of the access is still invite-only.

Open it if you want to experiment with AI video and can work around limits. Skip it if you need reliable access or care deeply about safety guardrails.

It fits specific jobs better than broad use.

• Early experimenters: You want to test what AI video can do now. You do not mind waiting or hitting walls.
• ChatGPT Pro subscribers: You already pay for premium access. You can try the higher-quality model without a new bill.
• Filmmakers doing pre-visualization: You need quick storyboards or concept videos. You will replace them with real footage later.
• Agencies mocking up concepts: You want to show a client a direction fast. You do not need polish yet.
• Social content creators: You need loopable or blendable short clips. You work with 720p or 1080p output.
• Tech-curious casual users: You want to see yourself in a generated scene. You treat the cameo feature as entertainment, not production.
• Patient troubleshooters: You will work around error messages, credit limits, and verification failures. You have backup accounts ready.

These are the parts you notice when the tool actually runs.

• Native audio generation: Sound matches the video automatically. You skip the step of adding effects in another tool.
• Improved physics: Objects stay in hands, and motion looks more natural. You spend less time fixing weird AI movement.
• Detailed prompt control: You can specify camera moves and shot sequences. You get closer to what you asked for.
• Editing features built in: Remix, Re-cut, Blend, and Loop let you iterate without starting over. You refine instead of regenerating from scratch.

The limits are real and disruptive.

• API discontinued: You cannot build on it. OpenAI shut down the API in September 2026 after only months of availability.
• Spotty access: You may never get an invite. Launch was US and Canada only, with iOS-first restrictions.
• Hidden caps: "Unlimited" plans are not. You hit walls around 20 images or one usable video, then wait 24 hours or pay more.
• Weak safety guardrails: It generates content ChatGPT refuses. Teen accounts see little real protection.
• Expensive Pro tier: You pay $200 for watermark-free 1080p. At $0.50-0.70 per second, a minute costs $30-42.
• Account lock-in: You cannot delete Sora without deleting your entire ChatGPT account. Your data trains models by default.
