Google DeepMind is an AI research organization that develops frontier artificial intelligence systems, scientific tools, and consumer products. It operates as a unified team combining the former Google Brain and DeepMind labs, led by CEO Demis Hassabis. The organization builds several categories of AI systems: large language models accessible through the Gemini app and API; specialized scientific models including AlphaFold for protein structure prediction, AlphaGenome for genomic analysis, and WeatherNext for forecasting; creative tools such as Veo for video generation, Lyria for music composition, and Nano Banana for image creation; and robotics systems through Gemini Robotics. It also releases open models under the Gemma family for external developers to build upon. Researchers, developers, and enterprise customers access these systems through multiple interfaces: the Gemini consumer app, Google AI Studio for prototyping, Google Antigravity and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform for business use, and APIs for integration. The organization emphasizes what it calls responsible AI development, with stated focus on safety research and broad societal benefit. Google DeepMind originated from two separate initiatives. DeepMind began in 2010 and achieved early recognition with AlphaGo defeating a world champion at Go, followed by AlphaFold and other scientific breakthroughs. Google Brain started in 2011 at X, contributed the Transformer architecture, TensorFlow, JAX, and improvements to Google Search and infrastructure.
